Phaselocked

With the Borderlands pre-sequel out now, thought I would celebrate both, the release of this game and the hours I spent on Borderlands 2. Most of that time was spent on my Siren, Elemental spec. Tons of corrosive, fire, electric damage. Tons of fun.

For this doodle, all I had was Maya on the left. My co-beard Tristan suggested I add the phaselocked enemy on the right...why didn't I think of that!? This doodles was done using all of the normal tools I use, pencil, pen, white out pen, and a small watercolor case with 16 colors. For her arcane tattoos I happen to have a regular blue pen on hand which worked perfectly.

Not sure when I will get to the Pre-sequel but I am looking forward to low gravity physics.

Chodo Swaggins & Nicolas Cage

Chodo Swaggins a 2nd level Halfling Cavalier and most recent inductee to the Pathfinder Society. He and his trusty companion Nicolas Cage are wild at heart and ready for what ever challenges they may face.

Their most recent expedition to the Temple of Empyrean Enlightenment led to a most horrifying discovery.

Highlights from their adventure

*Spoilers /begin*

  • A heretic priest named Dakang was actually a demon Vermlek and was corrupting everyone in the temple.
  • Companion fighter named Dog; (not my dog Nicolas) Almost succeeded in killing himself after being possessed by a haunt.
  • Companion Barbarian named Thick; Took some hallucinogens and attempted a trial that involved inserting his arm into the mouth of a turtle statue. The statue contained hot blades that chopped off his little finger.

*Spoilers /end*

All in all a disturbing mission, no one died...lots of fun was had.

Omnivore Shark

When my nephew Jolon created his mushroom monster, his older brother Dakota also sculpted something. The thing he created was much less...brutal in nature. He described it as a shark that only eats plants...some times small creatures. He eats sucking up organisms with his tiny mouth. I took some liberties with the size of the creature but the idea is still the same. Like I mentioned before, I wish I had taken pictures of the sculptures for reference, next time.

Labor Day Union Picnic At The Louisville Zoo 2014 EXTRAVAGANZA!!!

An illustration from a day at the zoo during the Labor Day Union Picnic.
This is a fun exercise of not removing the tip of the pen from the paper, focusing more on form and less on detail. Copic markers used for the grey tones.

Lub-lub? Kids think of the darndest things.

An illustration based off of a kneaded eraser sculpture (see: ninja turtle sculpture) my nephew Jolon made. He described the creature as carnivorous with two mouths and can fly to chase it's prey...the terrifying mind of a child. His brother Dakota sculpted something much nicer, I will have it finished soon. Next time I will take a picture of said sculptures for reference.

Half-Minute Hero: Gotta Go Fast (to save the world)

Haven't posted anything in a bit but I assure you I have been hard at it, working on various projects. This one has been sitting in my tiny sketch book for some time and finally got around to finishing it. This is from a psp game called Half-Minute Hero (I played the port for steam) a fun and silly game that is an homage to all the classic tropes from 8 and 16 bit era RPG video games. In it you race against the clock to save the world, the kick is the clock is set to 30 seconds. You must speed around the map at break neck speeds trying to gather gear and killing monsters in order to defeat the boss of each map before time runs out. My version of the hero has him looking not so great as the effects of moving so quickly has adverse side effects on the body. If you have ever seen a human centrifuge machine you know what I mean.

Kneaded Eraser Ninja Turtle

In between deciding what to doodle and eating pizza there is a magical dead zone of creativity. In that time I normally play with my kneaded eraser and sculpt it into various things. I have made hundreds of these kneaded eraser sculptures I just so happened to document this one. With a new TMNT film coming out soon this beloved childhood favorite has been on my mind a lot recently.

Hear me out.

Even though the original comic of TMNT is satire of what was going on in comics during the early 80's. Even though the original cartoon was just a vehicle to sell merchandise and toys. Even though almost all of the different reiterations of TMNT have ranged from bodacious to disaster *cough* Coming Out of their Shell tour, TMNT: The Next Mutation, and Turtles Christmas special *cough* I have stuck by it.

Will this new film be the end of the franchise? Will it be the worst TMNT project to grace the big screen. The answer to these questions is no. No matter how nostalgic you get for TMNT remember one thing. It was all a joke so just try to enjoy any and all TMNT for what it is worth. We will always have the original 1990 film and most recently the 2012 animated series which is fantastic.

The Misadventures of Tron Bonne

After nearly 15 years I finally got my hands on a copy of The Misadventures of Tron Bonne for the Playstation! Only halfway through it but it is amazing. I will start by saying I am in the camp that absolutely adores The Mega Man Legends games and was heart broken when the third installment was cancelled. It was the game that motivated me to buy a 3DS in the first place but shit happens. There is a spiritual successor to Mega Man in the form of Mighty No. 9 dropping next year so not all is lost. Been doodling a lot of Tron recently, I choose to draw her if she we're a little older, and a little curvier.

The Tron on Top is pencils scanned in with some digital color and the bottom right was done using a pen without any pencils or layout. Just went for it and think it turned out well.

Space Turnip

I have a new sketch book. Already filling up fast with stupid shit like this. Decided to get something for loose and casual sketches with pens. This doodle came from Ruth and I overhearing these two gentlemen, who, were like extras from American Psycho or that 80's business guy from Futurama. Any way, they mentioned going to a place called "The Space Turnip" to which his bro friend replies, "Is that a gay bar?" Now I must find this place, out of curiosity.

Pyramid Head Nurse

A commission I recently finished. When I was asked to do this I didn't even hesitate since I love the Silent Hill game series. There was much deliberation but this was the final product and I am really pleased with it. I personally prefer the SH2 version of Pyramid head with the butcher's apron and rubber boots but my client liked the movie version better so I went with that.

Here is a version with out the line art which looks neato.

Lastly are some thumbnails and rough drafts of where the project started. I worked on these while staying with my mother in the hospital.

Path of the Hunter: Hangman's Hymn

My favorite costume and technique from Mark of the Ninja. Finished this one back in March and it is fantastic. A solid 2-D platformer with gorgeous artwork and personality that perfectly captures what it must feel like to be a bad ass ninja. Pick it up on Steam, 60% off right now and completely worth it.

Pen brush and black watercolor.

Bonus: I add the coffee ring because I felt it was missing something. I normally just jump right in and feel out how I want the doodle to look like, but for the second time in this sketchbook I was stumped on a layout.

Sister Sister

This is a very unusual doodle from a game I received as a gift on Steam years ago called Chantelise: A Tale of Two Sisters. As part of an effort to make a sketch for every game I beat I had to go through with it, no matter how awkward or embarrassing. I had a hard time trying to come up with anything and this is the result...Overall a fun game with colorful sprites and surprising difficulty. A younger version of myself would have ate it up. Worth checking out if you are into these types of games. Demo is free on Steam and it is currently 50% off for the summer sale.

Etna

Easily my favorite character from the Disgaea game series. I could not begin to calculate the hundreds of hours I spent playing these.

As a bonus I scanned in the pencils.

Amnesia: NOPE!

Finally got around to beating Amnesia: The Dark Descent after owning it for 2 years. My faith in the survival horror genre has been restored. I only played when it was dark and I was alone (or everyone asleep) A very enriching game experience that often left me panicked and filled with dread. As the game nears the final act it gets especially tense. I found myself muttering "No no no no no!" around every new turn. If you enjoy creepy eastern European castles and Lovecraftian mythos or a good scare then please check it out.

Been playing Mario Kart 8 and had to get in on this Luigi death stare stare action. I was totally onto something when I did that Luigi Kart piece last year. WEEGEE!!!

Tuxedo Beard

With the reboot of Sailor Moon around the corner this entry seems appropriate. A mutual good buddy of Tristan's and I will be making his official debut in the Weirdo Beardos reboot, and with it a lot of requests ( I call them demands) One of these "requests" was for his character to appear as Tuxedo Beard and periodically save us. I love this idea and thought it deserved an entry.

Big Boi

A doodle that spawned from a conversation with Ruth. We saw a sign that read, come in dressed as "Big Boy" and get a free "Big Boy" platter. What came next was a full back story of a character that became a "Big Boy" lifer. Here is the result.

It was cute when he was a little guy. Now it is just weird and sad.

Warrior of Power

I just spent the last few weeks watching all 50 episodes of Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger and it was fantastic. You can read all about it on the wiki page. To sum it up it is a television series started back in 1975. The 16th installment Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger was the source material for what would become Power Rangers. Call me biased but I prefer the original Japanese version, for many reasons but you should judge for yourself.

Burai the Dragon Ranger, probably one of the saddest arcs and I understand why it was changed for a NA audience.

I have color versions of this and Witch Bandora ready for next week but here is just the line art.

Enjoy!

Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer

This sketch is a reflection of Dance of the Dream Man and one of my favorite episodes of Twin Peaks, Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer. Scott C's piece Concentrating on the J's is also a direct influence as well.
